Is personalised printing always digital?
Due to the variable content, personalised printed matter is naturally printed digitally. For larger volumes, we often combine offset and digital. A personalised print order, e.g. for a promotional campaign, usually consists of several items: shop posters, flyers, direct mail, vouchers etc. We split the print job into an offset part, with items without variable content, and a digital part, containting the items with variable content. The latter involves variable data printing, in which information from a database or external file is used to print variable data such as a list of names. So you can print thousands of unique items in just one print run. Variable may be about segmentation. That’s the case, for example, with a magazine or newspaper that has several regional editions.
The variable content can also be added as an extra digital run on top of offset printing. For a supermarket that publishes a promotional flyer in which each branch applies its own prices, the entire print run can be produced quickly and cost-effectively in offset — with the exception of the prices. A blank cut-out is then provided, after which the press sheets are passed through the digital printer to add the prices, branch by branch.
